Caulfield Cup winner Viewed was bumped many times, as was the favourite Alcopop, while Daffodil nearly fell. Outsider Sir Slick has been scratched from this afternoon’s $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, after failing to pass a veterinary examination on an injured hoof.

Kavanagh paid tribute to Rodd’s ride on Maldivian and said by the time rival jockeys realised they had to make a move the race was over.

”We had guys pressing buttons halfway through the race and, ‘Shit, the bird’s flown’ and Danny Nikolic on Zipping took off and everyone went mad,” Kavanagh said. ”Well, it was just too late. They had to make up too much ground.”

And this afternoon at Moonee Valley we’ll see the hot favourite Whobegotyou try to prove he’s not just a sit-and-sprint horse. He’s going to get that chance because Cox Plates almost never are.

And arch rival Heart Of Dreams will be there to establish he’s got the bigger ticker.

Whobegotyou is a natural backmarker, leaving Kavanagh to hope the race is run at a reasonable tempo. ”Every time you dissect the race, you can see it run a different way,” he said. ”The Cox Plate is a notoriously tactical race. Certainly there will be a lot of jockeys today planning things with owners. You may see someone do something totally out of left field.”

Cummings knows So You Think has Cox Plate potential, but believes the race might just be a little early in the young horse’s career.

Freedman is wily. He’s aiming Speed Gifted at the A$5.5 million Melbourne Cup. He hasn’t said so, but he’s probably worked out that he might just be able to get away with a Cox Plate in a weak year with a horse on the rise.

James Bartholomew Cummings was born and raised in Adelaide, working for his father at the Adelaide stables after completing high school at Marist Brothers, Sacred Heart College.  He took out his own training licence in 1953, utilising his father’s stables.  Bart first hit the headlines when he not only won his first Melbourne Cup in 1965 with Light Fingers

Bart Cummings first experienced the thrill of a Melbourne Cup win at 23 years of age when he strapped the home-bred Comic Court for his father Jim Cummings in 1950.  His training feat to date of 12 Melbourne Cup winners and 5 quinellas has earned him the title of “ Cups King ”. 

James Bartholomew ‘Bart’ Cummings AM (born 14 November 1927) is one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers, and is known as the "Cups King", referring to theMelbourne Cup, as he has won the ‘race that stops a nation’ a record twelve times.

He won his first Group 1 with Stormy Passage in the SAJC Derby in 1958 and has gone on to train stakes winners every year for 51 years since.  Viewed’s Melbourne Cup win in 2008 made it Group 1 win number 250, and a few days later Swick’s Group 1 win made it 251.   Bart went on to train his 252nd Group 1 winner at the AJC Derby in the same racing year 2008/2009

The Australian Racing Museum moved to Federation Square in Melbourne in 2004 and Bart Cummings’ 12 Melbourne Cup trainers’ trophies are currently on display there, an impressive sight.   In fact it was Mrs. Valmae Cummings, Bart’s wife, who first suggested trainers should receive a miniature replica of the Melbourne Cup trophy presented to the owners, a suggestion which has since been implemented by the Victorian Racing Club.

Flemington is arguably the centre of Australian racing.  The home of the Melbourne Cup is also the location of Saintly Place – the site of success for Bart`s incredible 12 Melbourne Cup winners.  A first class racing and training facility that has been the mainstay of Bart Cummings` training operations for 40 years.

In 2004, Bart received a surprise honour from the VRC.  The club presented J.B.Cummings with Lifetime Membership, the first time a trainer has received the honour.

Australian certainly love their leisure. They also worship sport . Though renowned for their egalitarianism , they are found of “the sport of king .”And one race every year stops the entire nation from working . Even if they are not actually present – instead glued to their television screens or their transistors – Australiana all over the country , of every age and from every walk of life , follow the horse running in Melbourne Cup .

The first Cup was run in 1861 . There were 17 starters and , paradoxically , the prize – apart from the money (170 pounds ) – was not a cup at all , but a hand – beaten gold watch . Archer, the Winning horse , had walked to Melbourne from its stable in Nowra ,New South Wales , a distance of 500 miles (800km)

The history of the Cup dates back to 1861, the resultant brain child of Captain Frederick Standish, one time VRC Chairman and former Chief Commissioner of Police in Victoria. As a former member of the Victoria Turf Club he conceptually founded the great race with the club committed to offering modest prize-money and a hand beaten gold watch. The conditions for the race would state “a sweepstakes of 20 sovereigns, 10 sovereigns forfeit or 5 sovereigns if declared, with 200 sovereigns added money”.

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s major annual Thoroughbred horse race. Billed as The race that stops a nation, it is a race for three-year-olds and over, over a distance of 3,200 meters. It is the richest and most prestigious “two-mile” handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races in the world. The event is held at 3 pm on the first Tuesday in November by the Victoria Racing Club, on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. This day is a public holiday for all working within metropolitan Melbourne, but not for country Victoria. For Federal Public Servants it is also observed as a holiday in the entire state of Victoria, and since 2007 also in the Australian Capital Territory

Since 1972, the distance to be covered was changed to 3200 meters to adhere to the metric system, from the original distance of 2 miles which is roughly about 3218 meters. A few records, such as the one made by Rain Lover had to be adjusted to suit the new distance. The best timing was recorded by Kingston Rule in the 1990 Cup Day, when he clocked 3:16:3, a record that remains unbroken. He is not to be confused with Kingston Town who is known as the champ of the eighties.

The Cup is run at Flemington which in 1861 was a recognized venue for race-meetings conducted by the Victoria Turf Club. It is located on former river flats adjacent to the Maribyrnong River, 15 minutes by road from the central business district. Flemington was fairly rough and ready in the early days with no running rails or recognized course proper, however the Melbourne Cup quickly caught on as the race on the Australian Racing Calendar and a carnival boasting garden parties, gaiety and ladies showing off their latest finery. Cup Day was renowned for its carnival atmosphere with shooting galleries, lawn parties and social engagements predominantly engaged at the Flemington Racecourse.
