It’s been a while since horse racing has seen such a close finish as it did in the Dubai 2010 World Cup and the results from today’s race were quite shocking to bettors.

Gloria De Campeao sits on top of the Dubai World Cup horse racing results after winning in a much-debated photo finish. The Brazilian horse went off at 25/1 odds and barely had enough to claim the massive purse. Ridden by Tiago Pereira, Gloria de Campeao covered the 2000 meters in 2:03.83 and officially won by a nose. Lizard’s Desire, who trainer Mike de Kock said “was the winner a jump past the line,” finished a short head in front of Godolphin’s third-placed Allybar, with American champion Gio Ponti fourth, 1? lengths back

Dubai Kahyala Classic

The first race of the day, the Dubai Kahyala Classic race, was won by Jaafer, owned by Shaikh Khalifa Bin Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Purebred Arabians Race

The Purebred Arabians $250,000 race was sponsored by Emaar. No Risk Al Maury, one of the favourites to win, came in second.

Al Quoz Sprint race

The $1 million Emirates-NBD sponsored Al Quoz Sprint race was won by Joy and Fun, owned by Wong Chun Nam and his wife.

Godolphin Mile race

The $1 million Godolphin Mile race, sponsored by Etisalat, Goldolphin-owned Calming Influence took home top honours.

UAE Derby

In the fourth race, the $2 million UAE Derby, Musir, owned by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, was the winner.

Dubai Golden Shaheen Race

The $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen,  was won in spectacular fashion by Kinsale King, owned by Sheehy LLC.

Dubai Duty Free race

The Dubai Duty Free race, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, with a $5 million purse, was won by Al Shemali, owned by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Gitano Hernando (3/1 at SBGglobal Sportsbook) and Gio Ponti (also 3/1) went off as the 2010 Dubai World Cup favorites before an extremely slow pace really ended their hopes of racing in their typical styles. Gio Ponti ended up in 4^th to finish out the super while Gitano Hernando never really contended.

They have combined to win the Fremantle Cup on two previous occasions: The Falcon Strike in 2002 and 2004.

Having second run back from a spell after being beaten as favourite behind Scan Air at Northam on November 24.

Was beaten eight lengths in a trial at Byford last week but Hall has advised punters to dismiss that effort and is confident he will be hard to beat.

• Seeking his second Fremantle Cup success after Money Magnet’s win in 2006.

• Was an easy trial mobile trial winner at Byford last Sunday by 14 metres when he dashed over the final 800 metres in 58.3sec and the last 400 in 28.6secs.

Bonavista Bay

• A brilliant winner of last week’s Golden Nugget
• Has to beat the history books to win the Fremantle Cup
• No Nugget winner has won a Fremantle Cup and Bonavista Bay is just the fifth Nugget winner to start in a Fremantle Cup

Mister Veejays Fella

• Is trained by Skye Bond-wife of Greg.
• The first husband and wife combination to have runners in the same Fremantle Cup
• Warmed up for the race with a good all-the-way win over Our Malabar last week
• However, this is a harder race.
• Has won 9 of his first 14 starts in WA

Dartmoor and Indian Giver

• According to Hall both are racing well but will need plenty of luck to win

Ohoka Rebel

• Hall upbeat about his chances and believes if he reaches the front and leads will win.

Alzona

• Hall also believes he can win the race if everything goes his way and he gets the right run.

Our Malabar

• A former Victorian pacer that is trained and driven by Bob Mellsop
• Worked brilliantly on Tuesday morning.
• Mellsop’s first drive in a Fremantle Cup
• Produced a brilliant effort last week by going down by a nose to Mister Veejays Fella.

Competition between two very good horses like Whobegotyou and Heart of Dreams with Speed Gifted and 3-year-old So You Think thrown in will be fascinating

Outsider Sir Slick has been scratched from this afternoon’s $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, after failing to pass a veterinary examination on an injured hoof.

Kavanagh paid tribute to Rodd’s ride on Maldivian and said by the time rival jockeys realised they had to make a move the race was over.

”We had guys pressing buttons halfway through the race and, ‘Shit, the bird’s flown’ and Danny Nikolic on Zipping took off and everyone went mad,” Kavanagh said. ”Well, it was just too late. They had to make up too much ground.”

And this afternoon at Moonee Valley we’ll see the hot favourite Whobegotyou try to prove he’s not just a sit-and-sprint horse. He’s going to get that chance because Cox Plates almost never are.

And arch rival Heart Of Dreams will be there to establish he’s got the bigger ticker.

Whobegotyou is a natural backmarker, leaving Kavanagh to hope the race is run at a reasonable tempo. ”Every time you dissect the race, you can see it run a different way,” he said. ”The Cox Plate is a notoriously tactical race. Certainly there will be a lot of jockeys today planning things with owners. You may see someone do something totally out of left field.”

Cummings knows So You Think has Cox Plate potential, but believes the race might just be a little early in the young horse’s career.

Freedman is wily. He’s aiming Speed Gifted at the A$5.5 million Melbourne Cup. He hasn’t said so, but he’s probably worked out that he might just be able to get away with a Cox Plate in a weak year with a horse on the rise.
